During those times Sri. V R Gopala Menon a devotee from Alapuzha used to stay at Sabarimala. V R Gopala Menon known by nick name as 'Sabrimalayile Kudikidappukaran' used to sing the sweet song Harivarasanam daily. He became a great friend of Sri. Vadakatham Easwaran Ayyappan songs in pretty who was the then melsanthi chief priest. Gopala Menon used to roam about in ayyappan songs in pretty and one day he died. Hearing the death of this great Ayyappa devotee Sri Easwaran Namboodiri broke his heart and he sang Harivarasanam just before closing the sanctum of lord Ayyappa to pay his tribute to this departed ayyappan songs in pretty. In Swami Vimochanananda sang in his beautiful voice and popularized Harivarasanam by travelling throughout the South India. Today, the Melshanti and the other priests stand on both the sides of Ayyappa idol and recite the Harivarasanam. When the song is sung about halfway, the chief priest or Melshanti puts off each of the lamp in the sanctum sanctorum. As the song ends only the Melshanti will be inside the Sreekovil or Sacred Sanctorium. When the final line is sung, the chief ayyappan songs in pretty closes the door of the Sanctum Sanctorum and locks it.
